For today's class, we had Carrie Fung who is a building and sustainability professional come talk to us. It is a very interesting subject and we are going to have 3 talks from her.

We are having more and more wildfires, heat waves, typhoons etc. Those are the effects of how we treat our planet. The construction industry is responsible for nearly 40% of the co2 emissions. Concrete is used a great deal in architecture, but it is the biggest climate change contributor in the building design industry.

When we zoom out to look at the world we see that China is the biggest polluter out of all the countries in the world. There is ways countries are trying to go more sustainable, such as the Paris agreement and COP27. But there is much talk and still, the goals are not within reach. To understand how decisions are made for a country and to see how the decisions affect the goal of lowering the temperature of our planet. We used https://en-roads.climateinteractive.org/scenario.html?v=23.2.1 to simulate it.

At first, we wanted to see what needed to be done to get the number down as much as possible. We were able to get it down to +1 degree but to be able to reach that goal we had to take away so much from the energy supplies we use today. The effects of doing that might be that many people lose their jobs if we don't have other jobs to provide them with. You can see this in the diagram below exactly what would need to be done, stop deforestation immediately and start the process of afforestation. The economic growth has to be very slow or non at all and we need to have a slow decline in the population. Those are not things that you can do immediately.

To make a comparison we wanted to see the worst scenario possible which turned out to be a +5.6 degree increase.

Using this made you see the effects of the decisions that have to be made in every country. I understand that it is very difficult to decide what to cut down on when it comes to losing jobs or the possibility of an economic crash.

Looking at this information I hope for a fast change and ways to work around it so we can save our planet.
