Materials in the World

Updated: Oct 9, 2023

I was looking closer at materials and junctions and how they connect. The field trip to London was very inspiring. I've chosen two pictures to look at closer.

Detail drawing of a possible way of how the glass joins the wood.
Detail

What are the primary materials?

Glass, wood metal.

How is it made?

The Wood slabs are slightly under the ground and the glass is placed on top of the wood. It all is attached with brackets to hold it up.

How are materials joined?

The materials are connected with metal brackets.

What do you notice about surfaces and finishes?

It is very minimalistic. The wood is very raw and looks natural. The glass is joined with as minimal as possible.

Does the detail contribute to the overall design of the space/building?

The detail junctions between the two materials are not the main part of the design they are probably meant to be as invisible as possible to let the rest of the design speak for itself.

How does it do that?

It is attached to the wood and holds up a small part of the glass.

Does the body interact with the materials?

Yes.

If so, how does this happen, e.g. which senses are engaged?

It is very interactive and you can see all the activities that is happening inside the glass.

How the glass is possibly attached to the wood.
Detail

What are the primary materials?

Wood, glass, mirror, dried flowers and wire.

How is it made?

The wood works as a frame surrounding the glass box. The wire lets the flowers hang and take the spotlight in the design, they look like they are floating in the space of the glass box.

How are materials joined?

The wire is attached with hooks screwed to the top if the wooden frame. The glass is sealed in between the wood. I guess that they might have used some sort of glue to keep the glass more in place between the wood.

What do you notice about surfaces and finishes?

The wood frame is very powerful on its own but it still lets the flowers be the centre of attention.

Does the detail contribute to the overall design of the space/building?

The detail is how the wood holds up the glass.

How does it do that?

It contributes so we can see the artwork form all sides.

Does the body interact with the materials?

No this is more an art piece than a thing you can interact with.
