Wax test 6

Updated: Oct 9, 2023

Taking my wax experimentation to a volume of the space to inform my design. By the start of this experiment, I had a clear idea of what I wanted the wax to do and how it should behave for the best result.

I heated the wax as usual and tried on a test piece to see if my idea would work. It behaved in the right direction but not completely how I wanted it to behave. I could see bubbles of how it started to "attack" the foam.

I heated up the wax even more to melt the foam. This time it made a deeper hole and I feel like it got in the right direction more to inform my shapes of the building. But not quite there yet.

Then when I got the wax as hot as I possibly could it set on fire. I did not know wax could be set on fire like that. There must have been something getting in the pot that created a chemical reaction for it to set on fire.

After that, the wax went more yellow so when I poured it on the blue foam it went more green. But it did not still quite do what I expected it to do. I wanted the holes to go deeper so I tried to pour more wax onto it but it still did not work.

Then I tried to fan it with a heat gun but that made the material more hard once it cooled down and did not work either.

The result was still very interesting, I like how the wax formed patterns and gave the material more texture. It looks more like nature has been attacking the material on the green side. It did not inform me of the overall design of the layout of the building but I will take inspiration from the patterns and natural shapes it made. It reminded me of a mountain texture where not everything is even and that could inform my stairs and other details of my design instead.
