I am interested in fabrics and wanted to experiment with a different material that have the potential to work in a similar way. I found wax interesting because if it is thin it is slightly see-trough like nylon when you stretch it. I was thinking that if I poor it over mesh that is easy to shape I can get different shapes covered with wax.
I used Modelling Wax, It melted fast and was easy to work with.
This is the metal mesh I used to experiment with.
I started by melting the wax in a pan at a low temperature. The wax melted fast.
Video where the wax is melting.
I poured the wax from different heights, if it was too close and hot it went through the mesh more than it stayed on. I poured it from higher so it would have the time to cool down a bit on the way down. I Expected it to go through and make nice drops through the mesh. You can see that a little bit in picture 3 but not as much as I expected it to be. It either went through or laid itself as a sheet on top of the mesh or rolled down the side.
I am pouring wax over the shape in different ways to see how it behaved at different heights and temperatures.
The finished result of this shape was thick on top and had a clear pattern of rolling down the sides. It did not create the shape I expected.
