Week 5 Learning from precedent

Updated: Oct 9, 2023

JS Bach Chamber music hall is designed for solo performances by Zaha Hadid architecture. The fabric moves and chances, stretch, compresses and moves around the space like a cocoon. The fabric used is a translucent fabric membrane, that specific fabric can compress to the thickness of a handrail or stretch to the height of the space.

The way the fabric construction is held up is by an internal steel structure and by being attached to the ceiling.

The design was designed to be reused and transported to new venues as well.

Polyester and Spandex

Polyester: There are 52 million metric tonnes of clothes worldwide that are made of Polyester. The material is not biodegradable, it is a type of plastic. The chemical that was produced in the 1940s, was a faster and cheaper material than cotton. At best it will take 20 years to decompose, at worst 200 years to decompose. https://goodonyou.eco/how-sustainable-is-polyester/

Spandex: It is also a type of plastic and has the same time to biodegrade as polyester.

There is sustainable ways to get these fabrics:

To use recycled synthetic materials is an option and modern-day’s technology is coming up with many new solutions for synthetic materials. Natural ways to create fabric or other materials.

More information on my portfolio about silk produced by silkworms and spiders and how that can be implemented in architecture and design as a fabric.
